How to Check Tire Tread Before It Costs You

A tire can look fine from the side and still be close to worn out where it meets the road. Knowing how to check tire tread takes only a few minutes, costs little or nothing, and can help you avoid poor wet-road traction, longer stopping distances, and an unexpected tire purchase.

Do the check in a well-lit spot with the vehicle parked on level ground. Turn the steering wheel so you can see the front tire tread, then inspect every tire - not just the one that is easiest to reach. Tires rarely wear at exactly the same rate, especially if alignment, suspension, inflation, or rotation has been neglected.

How to Check Tire Tread With a Penny

The penny test is a quick first check that most drivers can do right in the driveway. Take a U.S. penny and place it upside down in a main tread groove, with Lincoln's head facing down into the tire.

If the top of Lincoln's head is covered by the tread, there is more than 2/32 inch of tread remaining at that spot. If you can see the top of his head, the tire is at or below 2/32 inch and should be replaced. That is the legal minimum in many places, but it is not a target to drive down to if you regularly face rain, standing water, snow, or highway speeds.

Move the penny around the tire. Check the inside groove, center groove, and outside groove in several locations. One measurement does not tell the whole story. A tire may have acceptable tread in the center but be worn nearly smooth on one shoulder.

The penny test is useful because it is fast. Its limitation is precision. It tells you whether a tire is near the end, not exactly how much usable tread remains. For a clearer answer, use a tire tread-depth gauge.

Use a Tread-Depth Gauge for a Clear Reading

A basic tread-depth gauge is inexpensive and gives a measurement in 32nds of an inch. Push the gauge pin into a main groove, hold its base flat against the tread blocks, and read the scale. Take measurements across the inner, center, and outer areas of each tire.

New passenger-car tires commonly start around 10/32 to 11/32 inch, though it varies by tire type. Here is a practical way to read the numbers:

  • 6/32 inch or more: Generally good tread for normal driving, assuming wear is even and the tire is not damaged.
  • 5/32 to 4/32 inch: Start planning ahead, particularly if you drive often in heavy rain. Wet traction drops as grooves become shallower.
  • 4/32 inch: A smart replacement point for many drivers who deal with regular rain. Winter-capable performance is also reduced at this depth.
  • 3/32 to 2/32 inch: Replace the tire soon. Hydroplaning resistance and stopping performance on wet pavement are significantly compromised.
  • Below 2/32 inch: The tire is worn out and should not stay in service.
For winter driving, many tire professionals recommend replacing winter tires around 6/32 inch, even though the tread is not legally worn out. Their extra biting edges and deeper grooves are what make them useful in snow and slush. Once that depth is gone, the tire may still roll down the road, but it will not perform like a winter tire should.

Check the Wear Bars Too

Most modern tires have built-in treadwear indicators, often called wear bars. These are narrow raised strips that run across the bottom of the main tread grooves. Look for small triangle or “TWI” marks on the tire sidewall to help locate them.

When the surrounding tread is level with the wear bars, the tire is at 2/32 inch. That is the manufacturer's built-in signal that replacement is due. Wear bars are convenient, but do not wait until they are flush before thinking about new tires. By then, rain performance has already fallen off sharply.

Uneven Tread Wear Is a Repair Clue

Checking tire tread is not only about deciding when to buy tires. The wear pattern can point to a problem that will damage the next set if it is not corrected.

Wear concentrated in the center of the tire usually means overinflation. Too much air makes the middle of the tread carry more of the load. Wear on both outside edges can indicate underinflation, which allows the shoulders to flex and scrub against the road. Check pressure when the tires are cold and use the pressure listed on the vehicle's driver-door sticker, not the maximum pressure molded into the tire sidewall.

If one edge is worn more than the other, suspect an alignment issue. A vehicle that pulls, a steering wheel that is off-center, or a recent hard pothole hit can all be reasons to have alignment checked. Cupping or scalloped dips around the tire can point to worn shocks, struts, suspension components, or an out-of-balance wheel. A vibration at certain speeds is another reason not to ignore that pattern.

Run your hand lightly across the tread after looking at it. If it feels smooth one way but sharply rough the other, the tire may be feathering. Alignment settings are often involved. Do not assume rotation alone will fix it. Rotating a damaged wear pattern simply moves it to another corner of the vehicle.

Look for Damage While You Are There

Tread depth is only part of a tire inspection. Check for nails, screws, cuts, bulges, exposed cords, cracks, and sidewall damage. A bulge in the sidewall can mean internal structural damage and is not a safe repair situation. Replace that tire promptly.

Also look closely at the age of the tire. Find the four-digit DOT date code on the sidewall. The first two digits show the week it was made, and the last two show the year. For example, “1824” means the tire was manufactured in the 18th week of 2024. Tires can age out before the tread is fully gone, especially on vehicles that sit for long periods or trailers exposed to sun and weather.

A spare deserves an inspection too. It may have full-looking tread but low air pressure, cracking, or an age problem. A spare that cannot hold air is not much help on the shoulder of the road.

How Often Should You Check Your Tires?

Check tread about once a month and before a long road trip. It is also worth checking after you hit a pothole, curb, or road debris hard enough to make you question whether something was damaged. Regular checks are faster than dealing with a tire failure or finding out too late that an alignment problem has eaten through a nearly new tire.

Rotate tires at the interval recommended by your vehicle manufacturer, often around every 5,000 to 8,000 miles. Rotation helps spread wear more evenly, but the right schedule depends on the vehicle, tire setup, and whether the tires are directional or staggered. If you are unsure, ask before moving them around.
